Final Project

I picked Target for the focus of my project because of the personality that Target has seemed to create. When you mention Target, customers react. There is a sense of coolness and diversity associated with the Target brand. Whether you look at collaborations with fashion designers or the nontraditional store layout, Target strives to bring a bit of individualism to the “big box” idea.

Social media is vital for a brand like Target that wants to create a personality and connect with the public. Target has used their social media to create two way communications with its customers, both satisfied and dissatisfied. To know whether Target has been successful with their social media campaign, look no further than a new survey by L.E.K. Consulting. The survey found that Target ranked higher than Wal-Mart, Macy’s, and Best Buy in terms of social media promotion. Perhaps why Target has been successful is because they know their customers. The reason many other brands fail at social media, and others are successful is brand recognition. Target knows their customer, they know what their customer relates to. They take that knowledge and bring it to their social media outlets. Another great use of Target’s social media campaign is being able to view items offered regionally on their Facebook Page. As with any retailer, different regions require different things. A consumer wants to know before leaving the house what is available at their local Target. With the positive, comes the negative. Target has received backlash due to terrible customer service, and rude employees. Instead of ignoring the issue, Target takes to their Twitter page to smooth things over with disgruntled customers. Through their social media trinity (Facebook, Twitter, and Facebook) Target has successfully built their brand.

The best advice I can offer someone who lacks social media skills is to start with Facebook. Creating a page is easy, and takes less than 15 minutes. So many people are on Facebook, and its easily accessible. Facebook allows a one-on-one connect with customers, and the ability for owners to network at a low cost.

Conclusion
I think Target will continue to utilize their social media outlets to build their brand up even higher. As long as Target stays true to their customers, and continues to use social media for feedback there success with remain.
